It would take me years to examine my bent to favor my father and to despise my mother. Years finally to recognize that, yoked to him, faithful till the end, she had consigned her life to an emotional desert by staying in a marriage that year after year must have withered her heart. In all those years living with an indifferent husband—in complete denial of his sexual preferences—who lavished all his attention on the small girl whose birth she had imagined might become her solace in old age. Yet, despite her cruelty, she had been the one to urge me to “be different.” She had been the one to remind me: “You will be a writer!” We never did become “best friends.” With her controlling ways, she just wasn’t a whole lot of fun to be around, but we both recognized our moment that day when, perhaps for the first time, she must have felt she had a daughter and it felt as though I may have had a mother.
